A Brief History of . . . Faux Finishes
In recent years, faux finishes have enjoyed a huge resurgence in popularity.
Derived from the French word "faux", meaning false, these
finishes simulate many materials and surfaces that have been used in
the construction of simple homes, to palaces and structures of great
significance in times past. Not just a fad, faux finishes have been
used for thousands of years when the original material was not available,
too expensive, or its use was technically unfeasible.
Today's Master Faux Finisher can accurately recreate marbles, rare
stone, fine woods, textiles, old world European plasters and textured
wall finishes, along with natural aging and distressing techniques.

A Brief History of . . . Canadian Institute of Decorative Finishes
Phil Wiebe has had a keen interest in faux woodgrain and marble since
before he entered the work force. He began his painting career in 1990,
working with his hands, creating finishes, and learning new techniques
for ever-changing products. With passion, he has applied paint to surfaces
full-time and has accumulated over 19 years of knowledge in the painting
industry.
Phil obtained his Interprovincial Canadian Certification for the trade
of Painter and Decorator and is a Certified Instructor authorized by
Faux Effects International. Upon being introduced to the Faux Effects®
products, he found them superior to products he was currently using.
Because this is the most extensive, compatible product line in the industry,
Phil uses these environmentally friendly products. Faux Effects’
comprehensive line added a new dimension to Phil’s field of faux
finishing. Utilizing Faux Effects® patented products and application
techniques, Phil has been showing his students how to achieve professional
results since 2008. For many years Phil has been a source of inspiration
to friends and is known for his sound painting advice and tips. He continues
his study of original materials such as natural wood, marble, onyx,
granite, and rock, taking on the challenge of imitating these natural
compounds with paint, plaster, glazing mediums, etc.
Phil’s library consists of manuals written by famous painters
in the decorative field. He has received training in European Woodgraining
and Marbling by Mike MacNeil, Freeman ot the City and Guilds of London;
Advanced Training at the Faux Effects Studio by Caridad, Vero Beach,
Florida; Advanced Training at Faux Design Studio, Addison, Illinois
by Sheri and Casey. Last, but not least, a tribute to Phil’s mentor,
teacher, counselor, and adviser who is his father. These essentials
were taught by Ralph Wiebe, who in turn received the fundamentals in
the painting field from his father, Albert I. Wiebe.
